February 20, 2026

I’ve been thinking back to Groundhog Day earlier this month, and I find it so cute—and honestly a little comical—that soooooo many people celebrate it.

In some areas, especially in the neck of the woods where I grew up, it is a HUGE annual tradition. People gather before the sun even comes up, sometimes in the freezing cold, just to find out whether a groundhog sees his shadow.

And the crowds? Unbelievable!

I have always said that someday I would like to attend the actual celebration and see Punxsutawney Phil make his famous appearance at daybreak on February 2.

I can’t exactly say it is an official item on my bucket list—LOL—but it is tucked away somewhere on the list of things I wouldn’t mind experiencing before my time on this earth is done.

Maybe I just want to see what all the hype is about???!!!!!

But looking back on Groundhog Day got me thinking about something a little deeper.

Isn’t life sometimes a lot like Groundhog Day?

A date rolls around again after 365 days, and suddenly there it is. Another year. Same date.

But sometimes, if we’re really honest with ourselves, it can also feel like the same problems. The same struggles. The same worries. The same questions. Maybe even the same battles we thought we would have conquered by now.

Another year has passed, yet somehow we can find ourselves standing in a familiar place.

And I wonder how many times we do that in life.

We keep repeating something over and over, hoping this time the outcome will somehow be different. We keep carrying something we should have put down. We keep fighting battles that perhaps we need to approach differently. We keep waiting for something outside of us to tell us that a new season is coming.

Maybe that’s why Groundhog Day feels a little symbolic to me.

Every February 2, people wait for a prediction about whether winter will continue or spring will arrive early.

But wouldn’t it be interesting if life were that simple?

What if we could step outside one morning, look for a shadow, and know exactly how much longer a difficult season was going to last?

Six more weeks?

Okay. I can handle that.

Unfortunately, life doesn’t work that way.

There isn’t a Punxsutawney Phil for our personal struggles. There isn’t a Farmer’s Almanac that can tell us exactly when our circumstances will change. And there certainly isn’t a meteorologist who can accurately forecast the storms and sunshine coming into our lives.

Sometimes we simply have to keep going.

Maybe the lesson isn’t about whether the groundhog saw his shadow that morning.

Maybe it’s about recognizing the patterns in our own lives.

If the same problem keeps showing up year after year, maybe it’s time to ask ourselves why.

If we’re still fighting the same battle, maybe we need a different strategy.

If we’re still carrying the same hurt, maybe it’s time to begin letting some of it go.

And if we’re standing in the same place we were 365 days ago, perhaps this is the year we finally decide to take a different step.

Because unlike Groundhog Day, we don’t have to keep reliving the same day over and over again.

We get to grow.

We get to change.

We get to make different choices.

We get to begin again.

So, as I look back on February 2, 2026, maybe it really wasn’t about whether Phil saw his shadow or not.

Maybe that isn’t the prediction that matters most.

Maybe the better question is this:

What am I going to do differently before February 2 rolls around again?

And who knows?

Maybe someday I’ll actually make it to Punxsutawney at daybreak to see what all the fuss is about.

It’s not officially on my “Bucket List”.

But it’s there somewhere.

And that makes me smile.
