The Day I Didn’t Want to “People”

When God Interrupts Your Quiet Shell for a Reason

Did you ever wake up and just not want to “people” today?

Not because you’re angry. Not because you’re upset with anyone.

You just… don’t feel like being a people person. You want what I call a “turtle day.” I usually say: I am going to “turtle turtle” today.

The kind of day where you quietly retreat into your own little shell. You go about your business, mind your own world, and simply exist for a while without being seen, needed, or engaged.

Not being rude. Not being mean. Just peacefully living inside your own little bubble.

But sometimes… God has other plans.

You stop to get gas, and the person at the pump beside you can’t get their credit card to work. So you help them. And before you know it, they start chatting.

Then you stop for coffee. You purposely choose the drive-thru because you’re still committed to your turtle plan. But the young girl at the window is overly bubbly and chatty. There are no cars behind you, so she happily keeps talking.

Next stop — Staples to return an Amazon package. A quick in-and-out, right?

Except there’s only one employee working two counters. The line moves slowly. You know your coffee is waiting in the car… getting colder by the minute.

But something interesting happens.

The people in line start talking. Not complaining. Just talking.

And somehow you find yourself politely chatting with them too.

Then you make a quick stop at the grocery store for a few items. Just a couple things.

Except somehow your cart fills up… and it seems like every single aisle brings another small conversation with someone new.

By the time you finally get home, you reheat your now-cold coffee and realize something.

Maybe you needed those interactions after all?

Maybe God knew you needed them.

Your mood is lighter. Your heart feels calmer. Your outlook is brighter.

And there’s this quiet inner peace that settles in.

Then another thought hits you…

Maybe those conversations weren’t really for you at all?

Maybe the person at the gas pump needed someone patient to help them?

Maybe the bubbly girl at the coffee window needed someone to smile back?

Maybe someone in that Staples line needed a moment of kindness instead of frustration?

Maybe someone in that grocery aisle simply needed to feel seen.?

Maybe you made a difference in someone’s day.?

Maybe you made someone smile?

And chances are…

If you’re feeling a little lighter and more peaceful after those conversations… they probably are too.

So remember this on the days you want to hide in your shell:

Be the difference.

Be the light.

Because you never truly know

who needs your smile today.

And, after all …. today is the day before Thanksgiving …. so much to be thankful for …..

….feeling Blessed …. with
